Data Analyst Resume: SQL, BI & Experiment Keywords ATS Matches

Product, marketing, and ops teams hire data analysts through Greenhouse, Lever, and Workday before an analytics lead opens your portfolio. ATS for analyst roles scores SQL, Python, Tableau or Power BI, ETL, dashboards, and A/B testing when those terms appear in the requisition—not “data-driven storyteller” alone.

Portfolio Links vs Keyword Match: What Gets Data Analysts Past ATS First

Hiring managers love Tableau Public and GitHub notebooks. ATS ranks text. A beautiful portfolio link in a header icon does nothing if SQL, dashboard, and ETL tokens from the job description never appear in extractable resume body text.

Put portfolio URLs as plain text in the contact block, then still list the stack from the posting in skills and bullets with business outcomes (forecast accuracy, funnel conversion, decision latency). Portfolio-only applications are a frequent silent reject in analyst ATS queues.

Skills to review for Data Analyst applications

Use these terms as a starting checklist, not a universal requirement. Include a skill only when it fits the posting and accurately describes your experience.

SQL

Product and ops analytics teams at SaaS and marketplace companies (Greenhouse/Lever/Ashby stacks) treat SQL as a near-hard filter. It scores higher next to warehouse tables, join complexity, or decision outcomes—not “proficient in databases.” Do not bury SQL only in a soft skills list while bullets say “analyzed data.”

Python

Python is required on many product-analytics and growth-analyst reqs, optional on pure BI roles. Put it next to pandas/scripts you ran or automation you owned when the JD names it. Do not invent Python if the role is SQL + Tableau only—interview whiteboards will expose it.

Tableau

Enterprise and marketing analytics ATS often literal-match Tableau (Workday/Greenhouse). Pair it with dashboards stakeholders used, refresh cadence, or a metric moved. Listing Tableau and Power BI when you only know one is a common false-positive that fails the take-home.

Power BI

Corporate FP&A-adjacent and ops analyst postings (especially SuccessFactors/Workday employers) filter on Power BI / DAX. Tie it to semantic models or report packs, not “built charts.” Do not substitute “BI tools” when the JD says Power BI.

ETL

Data-adjacent analyst roles weight ETL when the posting owns pipelines or warehouse handoffs. Score rises when ETL sits beside Airflow/dbt/SQL transforms you touched. Do not claim ETL for one-off Excel exports—that reads as keyword stuffing to hiring managers.

data visualization

Weaker alone than Tableau/Power BI, but still matched on generalist analyst reqs. Use it once, then name the tool and audience. Avoid a resume that repeats “data visualization” without a single named platform or business decision.

dashboards

Product and revenue teams scan for dashboards as delivery proof. Higher score when you name the tool, user (PMs, sales ops), and usage or outcome. “Created dashboards” with no stack or metric is the default under-match.

Excel

Still a baseline filter in many corporate analyst ATS (Taleo/Workday). It scores when tied to models, pivots, or Power Query—not as your only technical skill on a SQL-heavy JD. Do not lead with Excel if the posting’s must-haves are SQL and a BI tool.

forecasting

Growth, finance-ops, and demand-planning analyst reqs match forecasting / projection language. Pair with MAPE, accuracy, or planning cadence when true. Soft “helped with forecasts” without method or tool under-ranks forecasting-heavy postings.

A/B testing

Product and growth analyst ATS (Meta/Uber-style product orgs, SaaS) weight A/B testing or experimentation. Put experiment design, metric, and lift in the same bullet. Synonyms like “tested ideas” often fail exact-match filters when the JD says A/B testing.

5 Resume Tips for Data Analyst Applications

Specific to Data and the keywords employers scan for.

  1. 1.

    Mirror the posting’s Data vocabulary

Compare the Data Analyst posting with your experience. If terms such as SQL, Python, Tableau are relevant and accurate, use them in a skills section and explain where you used them. Do not add qualifications you lack.

  2. 2.

Standard section labels beat creative headings

Use clear headings such as Experience, Education, and Skills. Check that employers, job titles, and dates remain easy to identify after you export the document.

  3. 3.

Tie tools and methods to outcomes

Give the reader evidence of how you used relevant skills such as SQL, Python, Tableau. Describe your contribution and its scope; add an outcome or measurement only when you can substantiate it.

  4. 4.

Keep one column and simple file formats

Follow the upload instructions in the application. A straightforward single-column layout reduces formatting complexity. Check text order in your exported file and review any fields the application fills automatically. No layout guarantees parsing in every system.

  5. 5.

Score your resume against a real JD before you apply

Compare your Data Analyst resume with a specific job description on MatchRate. Review the suggested gaps against your actual experience before applying changes. The result is guidance, not access to the employer screening criteria.

Common ATS Mistakes in Data Analyst Resumes

Check your draft for these issues before submitting an application.

  • Mistake 1:Using creative layouts that break parser extraction for Data Analyst applications
  • Mistake 2:Missing exact terms from the target Data Analyst job description
  • Mistake 3:Listing tools without measurable outcomes or project impact
  • Mistake 4:Using generic summaries that do not reflect Data role requirements
  • Mistake 5:Submitting the same resume to multiple postings without tailoring

Data Analyst resume & ATS FAQ

Understanding parsing and keyword searches

Greenhouse documents resume parsing as filling candidate-profile fields, and keyword search as a recruiter feature. These are different operations. Its guidance lists formatting issues that can interfere with parsing; a failed parse can require manual correction. This does not establish a universal rejection rate or scoring formula across employers.
