Make Your Resume Easy for a Hiring Reader to Assess

Help the reader locate the essentials

Make your recent work, relevant skills and qualifications easy to find. Use clear section headings and consistent entry structure. A short summary is useful when it adds context, especially for a career change; omit it when it only repeats generic adjectives.

Do not assume a universal number of seconds for every review. Instead, ask a trusted reader to identify your target type of work and strongest evidence from the first page, then discuss what was unclear.

Replace impressions with evidence

Words such as strategic, dynamic and results-oriented do not explain a contribution on their own. Describe the decision, task or problem and your part in addressing it. Distinguish leading an initiative from supporting one.

Numbers can add context, but an unsupported number weakens credibility. A clear qualitative result is preferable to an invented percentage. Explain the period and scope when you use a metric.

Remove avoidable ambiguity

Keep dates and titles consistent. Label projects, contract work and coursework so the reader understands the setting. A concise explanation of a transition can be helpful when relevant, but you do not need to disclose private personal details.

Read each bullet from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with your employer. Expand internal acronyms and explain specialist terms when the target audience would not recognize them.
