Resume Mistakes: A Practical Editing Checklist
Review your resume for factual errors, unclear contributions and unnecessary complexity. These checks improve the document without relying on unsupported surveys about what every hiring manager rejects.
Check facts before style
Confirm your email, phone number, employer names, dates and credential status. Verify that a rewrite has not promoted a supporting responsibility into ownership. Keep academic work and personal projects clearly labeled.
If a result is shared with a team, explain your contribution. If you cannot substantiate a numerical claim, describe the work and its practical outcome instead.
Remove vague and repetitive material
A list of responsibilities explains the job but may not explain what you did. Add a specific project, decision or process where it is relevant. Remove repeated summaries and skills that do not support the target application.
Avoid replacing every ordinary word with an impressive-sounding synonym. Technical terms are useful when accurate; inflated language can obscure a simple contribution.
Review the finished file
Open the export and check page breaks, links and text order. Use a readable font size and clear headings. Follow the application file requirements rather than a universal page-count rule.
Ask a reader unfamiliar with your work to explain what you did from the document. Their confusion can reveal missing context, even when spelling and grammar checks pass.

Illustrative guidance, not a verified customer result. Use only details that are true for you.
Weak: Responsible for customer reports. More informative, if accurate: Prepared monthly customer reports, reconciled source figures and summarized open issues for the account review. A metric is optional when the contribution is already clear.
