Resume Rejection: What to Check Before Your Next Application

Separate known feedback from speculation

Record any explicit employer feedback. If none was provided, label the reason as unknown. Do not infer a hidden keyword threshold from the speed of an email or assume that a different template would have changed the outcome.

Check the required qualifications, location, application questions and requested documents. Greenhouse documents configurable rules based on application answers, but that does not tell you whether a specific employer used them.

Fix errors that make the application harder to assess

Review contact details, dates, missing attachments and broken portfolio links. Open the submitted file, not just the editable original. Check for clipped text, inconsistent employer names and automatically populated fields that changed your history.

Read for unsupported claims and irrelevant detail. Keep work examples that demonstrate the target responsibilities. Do not add an invented metric or credential to compensate for a weak match.

Improve the process without over-interpreting small samples

Keep a private application log with the role, date, resume version and outcome. Review patterns across comparable applications while remembering that role fit, timing and competition differ.

A resume revision is worth making when it improves accuracy or clarity. It is not necessary to claim that it will raise response rates by a fixed percentage.
