Why Each ATS Checklist Item Matters
Applicant tracking systems do not “read” your resume the way you do. They extract text, map it to structured fields, and compare those fields to the job description’s keyword model. Parsers expect a single column, standard headings like “Work Experience” and “Education,” and contact details in the main body—not locked in headers or footers. That is why items like simple layout, standard fonts, and no graphics are first in the checklist: they protect parsing, which every later score depends on.
Keywords & content
After parsing, ATS compares your text to required skills, job titles, certifications, and tools from the posting. Exact matches rank higher than synonyms—if the JD says “Salesforce,” write “Salesforce,” not only “CRM.” Checklist items here cover mirroring the job title, listing must-have skills, spelling out acronyms once, and quantifying achievements so bullets contain both keywords and evidence.
Technical details
File name, date consistency, selectable text, and bullet formatting affect whether recruiters see a clean record in Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, or iCIMS. A scanned PDF or Canva image may look fine to you but arrive as a blank profile in the ATS. Technical checklist items catch those issues before submission.
